Diamond Head State Monument

Diamond Head State Monument offers breathtaking views overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Honolulu. In fact the view is so good, it was used by the US military as a post for preventing attacks against Honolulu.

The trail takes you to the edge of a 300,000 year old crater. While the hike isn’t that long in terms of distance, it can be somewhat challenging due to its ascent. Parts of the trail are over uneven rock, and the 99 steps near the end of the hike are steep. Also, the only water fountains are at the beginning of the trail, so you’ll want to bring a water bottle or bottled water to stay hydrated.

Fun hike, bring water. Save a few bucks and park outside the monument. Get there early. It's better when there are less people. Guy at the top will try to sell you a 5 dollar piece of paper saying you finished the hike but will stamp your entrance ticket for free.

Awesome little climb up. Very busy though. While this is fine for the average tourist, expect to see some people just doing it because it is "cool". As in: with high-heels and walking really slowly up the narrow path. Don't be afraid to "excuse" yourself past them to make it a workout. Be sure to go all the way to the very top above the bunker.

A nice, quick hike just a few minutes outside of the city. If you didn't realize, it's all uphill on the way out, so just be prepared for that. And the trail is fairly rocky, so I would recommend sneaker or hiking shoes over flip flops or sandals.
