1 hour bus ride from Madrid. Spend 3-4 hrs here then return back to Madrid on bus. Be sure to get the $3 audio tour. Well worth it. Interesting that the Spaniards don't talk about the Spanish Inquisition much. Never mentioned it here, although this was where it was headquartered. Found out later that the Inquisition & civil war is NOT something Spain is proud of...hence the silence. Understandable. Site is rich in history. Nice people. Great country!

This is the royal palace to end all royal palaces. Gigantic proportions. Beautiful furnishings, painting and tapestries. A crypt that houses most of the royalty of the 1500’s and a stunning French garden. Plan on spending at least half a day. The associated village is charming and a great place to find a good tapas lunch.
