Abu Simbel Temple Complex
The Abu Simbel Temples, situated in southern Egypt near the Sudanese border, were carved into a mountainside during Pharaoh Ramesses II’s reign in the 13th century BCE. These temples were constructed to honor Ramesses II and his queen, Nefertari, showcasing the grandeur of his reign. The larger temple is dedicated to the gods Amun, Ra-Horakhty, and Ptah, as well as to Ramesses himself, while the smaller temple honors the goddess Hathor and Queen Nefertari. A notable feature of the Abu Simbel Temples is the biannual solar alignment, where the rising sun illuminates the inner sanctum of the Great Temple, casting light on the statues of the gods.
