Ajloun Castle
Drive onward through the Jordan Valley to Ajloun for a tour of the crusader era Saracen Castle built by the armies of Salah ad din. An important strategic fortress, helping to control the area between Damascus and Cairo, and one of the few castles built to defend against the Crusaders. Ajloun is remarkably well preserved and a prime example of Islamic military architecture of the 12th and 13th centuries. The castle occupies a commanding position on Jebel Auf with views over the countryside. In its heyday it had seven towers and was enclosed by a dry moat 15 meters deep. Inside it is a maze of interlinking rooms and tunnels. Although the castle was destroyed on several occasions by attacking forces and earthquakes, it was rebuilt each time and restoration work is ongoing.

At its heart is a dramatic colonnaded public space from where cobbled, arcaded streets rutted with the tracks of Roman cartwheels lead past shop fronts and bathhouses to an impressive theatre. At the edge of Jerash is the Temple of Artemis with its exquisitely carved Corinthian capitol. We finally return to Amman for an overnight stay after a long, enriching day of exploration.

Wadi Rum Desert – Bethany & Beyond - Dead Sea "New Testament Jordan & the Mysterious Sea Below: Earth’s Natural Spa"
1
Bethany Jordan River Baptism Site of Jesus
After breakfast, drive to the Dead Sea, lowest point on the earth's surface, and tour the newly-excavated Maqdas Baptismal Site. Biblical archaeologists, working from clues supplied by the Madaba mosaic map, believe this to be the spot where John the Baptist lived and worked, and where Jesus was baptized in the waters of the Jordan River. The extensive water channels, cisterns and baptismal fonts, as well as the impressive size of the very early (3rd-4th Century) pilgrimage churches on this site, certainly suggest that this is where the earliest Christian pilgrims believed the Baptism took place. The walk past "Elijah's well" to the St. John church on the banks of the Jordan is a pleasure in itself, as you follow the winding trail through marshes of high reeds and tamarisk trees.
