Holland Bamboo The history of Holland, Bamboo, Jamaica is intertwined with the broader history of Jamaica itself. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Jamaica was a British colony and an important hub of the Atlantic slave trade. Many enslaved Africans were brought to the island to work on the numerous sugar cane plantations. Holland Estate, located in the parish of St. Elizabeth on the southern coast of Jamaica, was one of these plantations. It was established in the mid-18th century and quickly became a significant producer of sugar and rum. The estate covered a vast area and employed a large number of enslaved Africans to work on the fields and in the sugar mills. Bamboo River, a small settlement near Holland Estate, was named after the nearby river of the same name. The origins of the name "Bamboo" are uncertain, but it is believed to have been derived from the abundant bamboo plants found in the area.
