Full day to Madaba Mount Nebo Kerak Castle Tour

1
Madaba Madaba is a bustling city that is best known for its artistic beauty. Adorned with mosaics from the Byzantine Empire, this colourful city is steeped in history. As Madaba is home to quite a small population, it has the ambiance of a large market town rather than a city. During the Iron Age, the town of Madaba became a Moabite border city, mentioned in the Bible (Numbers 21:30 and Joshua 13:9), controlled for some time by some Israelite tribes. It then came under the control of the Arab Nabatean's Kingdom of Petra, before becoming part of the Roman Province of Arabia.

St. George's Church This rather modest 19th-century Greek Orthodox church houses a treasure of early Christianity. Imagine the excitement in 1884 when Christian builders came across the remnants of a Byzantine church on their construction site. Among the rubble, having survived wilful destruction, fire and neglect, the flooring they discovered wasn’t just another mosaic but one with extraordinary significance: to this day, it represents the oldest map of Palestine in existence and provides many historical insights into the region. Crafted in AD 560, the map has 157 captions (in Greek) depicting all the major biblical sites of the Middle East, from Egypt to Palestine. It was originally around 15m to 25m long and 6m wide, and once contained more than two million pieces. Although much of the mosaic has been lost, enough remains to sense the complexity of the whole.

Mount Nebo The Bible says that Mount Nebo was where Moses lived out his final days and saw the Promised Land, which he would never enter. It is said that Moses' body may be buried here, although that has yet to be proven. There are two peaks on Mt. Nebo, Siyagha and al-Mukhayyat. Part of the Abarim mountain range, Mount Nebo is mentioned in the Bible as the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land before his death. The view from the summit provides a panorama of the West Bank across the Jordan River valley.

Kerak Archaeological Museum Traversing the country from Madaba in the north to Petra in the south, the King’s Highway traces a haphazard path through the rolling, dusty landscapes of Jordan, across an endless expanse of golden hues punctuated by sand-coloured towns, clusters of olive groves and crumbling ruins. Made for a road trip, many a tourist has spent a day following its route, but for reasons of time or inclination, most are unable to explore all its treasures along the way. Travel is always about compromise, but there is one stop along this famous road that every visitor to Jordan needs to make time for: the ancient fortified city of Kerak, a 2,000-year old settlement atop a hill that boasts what is considered by many to be one of the greatest Crusader castles ever built. In existence since Biblical times, and once part of the Kingdom of Moab, a fortress has always existed atop this hill in the desert, but it wasn’t until the 12th century that Kerak Castle as we know it came to be.

Explore Petra today on a full day

1
Petra Situated between the Red Sea and the Dead Sea and inhabited since prehistoric times, the rock-cut capital city of the Nabateans, became during Hellenistic and Roman times a major caravan centre for the incense of Arabia, the silks of China and the spices of India, a crossroads between Arabia, Egypt and Syria-Phoenicia. Petra is half-built, half-carved into the rock, and is surrounded by mountains riddled with passages and gorges. An ingenious water management system allowed extensive settlement of an essentially arid area during the Nabataean, Roman and Byzantine periods. It is one of the world's richest and largest archaeological sites set in a dominating red sandstone landscape. After the visit to Petra we will drive to Wadi Rum for overnight stay.

Wadi rum and Jeep ride

Wadi Rum Protected Area Wadi Rum is a protected area covering 720 square kilometers of dramatic desert wilderness in the south of Jordan. Huge mountains of sandstone and granite emerge, sheer-sided, from wide sandy valleys to reach heights of 1700 meters and more. Narrow canyons and fissures cut deep into the mountains and many conceal ancient rock drawings etched by the peoples of the desert over millennia. Bedouin tribes still live among the mountains of Rum and their large goat-hair tents are a special feature of the landscape. There are many ways to enjoy the attractions of Rum, including jeep, camel and hiking tours and you can stay overnight in a Bedouin tent and gaze at the amazing panoply of stars. To safeguard its unique desert landscape, Wadi Rum was declared a protected area in1998 and an intensive conservation programme is now underway. After the tour we will drive to Dead Sea for Overt night stay
