Southern Right Whales come to visit Hermanus shores to give birth or to find a mate every year between June and December. The area around Hermanus was initially inhabited by the Khoisan indigenous people. Later, it became a farming community settled by European colonists.
In the early 1900s, Hermanus gained prominence as a whaling station. Southern Right Whales were abundant in Walker Bay, attracting whalers to the area. However, whaling activities ceased in the 1960s due to declining whale populations and global conservation efforts.
