Pantheon The Pantheon, situated in the heart of Rome, is one of the ancient world’s greatest architectural marvels. Its enduring legacy extends through more than two thousand years of history, from its original conception in the Roman Empire to its role in the Christianization of Rome, and on to its modern identity as a national and architectural icon. The first version of the Pantheon was constructed by Marcus Agrippa, the right-hand man of Emperor Augustus and a powerful general. Built around 27 BCE, Agrippa’s Pantheon was part of a broader plan to transform the Campus Martius area of Rome. This version of the Pantheon was a standard rectangular Roman temple structure, likely dedicated to all gods (hence the name "Pantheon") and intended to glorify both Augustus and the Roman gods who were believed to protect the empire.
