Chapel of Bones Constructed in the 16th century by Franciscan monks, who faced a pressing issue: the city's cemeteries were overflowing. To make room for new burials, many bones from older graves were exhumed and placed within the chapel’s walls, creating the spooky display of human remains you see today. This practice was partly driven by the aftermath of the Black Death, which had ravaged Europe and caused significant population loss. The chapel was designed to remind visitors of the transient nature of life and the certainty of death, with the phrase "We bones that are here, await yours" inscribed on its walls. It’s a powerful reflection of the time's attitude toward mortality and the cycles of life and death.
