Itinerary
1
Piazza San Marco
In a tangled, narrow maze such as Venice, St. Mark's Square will seem like a bright, beautiful, harmonious area with its 12,000 square meters surrounded by beautiful buildings. It is always beautiful, regardless of the season and time of day or night; I suggest coming back here several times, at different hours of the day, to see how the light and shadows continuously transform it.
2
Doge's Palace
As you can see, it has a perfect position between the waters of St. Mark's basin and the monumental area between the Piazzetta and the Pier. For the over one thousand years of the Republic of Venice's existence, the Doge's Palace was the center of power: it was the doge's home, the government's center, and the hall of justice. You'll find few buildings in the world that can rival this level of art, architecture, and glitz.
3
Canal Grande
This canal has been called "the most beautiful street in the world"!
You can see the canal all in one go by letting the banks pass you by from the windows of a vaporetto, or you can make a number of stops: each of the main buildings have their own dedicated audio guides, while right now I'll take you on a trip down the canal, starting from train station and reaching all the way to St. Mark's.
4
Gallerie Dell'Accademia
The museum was founded in 1750 along with the Academy of Fine Arts, which had been equipped with an impressive number of paintings, pottery, and casts of ancient statues for educational purposes.
5
Ghetto Ebraico
Yet the word "ghetto" has an ominous sound: it has become a synonym of imprisonment and suffering, of being closed off. Ironically, its origin comes from a word in Venetian dialect... pronounced with a German accent! You have to understand that in foundries, bronze casting was called "geto". In fact, in 1516 the Senate of the Republic decided to concentrate the Jewish community on this island where the foundries had previously been located, here at the end of the Cannaregio district.
6
Murano
Murano is one of the most enchanting locations in Venice's lagoon!
When choosing a souvenir from Venice (which range from expensive leather masks to small plastic gondolas), you will be offered a large assortment of glassware: colored beads, blown glass animals, jewelry, objects, and increasingly large, fragile, and complicated furnishings. The glass of Venice, indeed, of Murano, is celebrated all over the world.
