Pompeii Submerged by a pile of lava and ash during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, the city has become one of the major tourist attractions in Italy. Visiting the excavations of Pompeii one gets the impression that time has stopped at the moment of the eruption, thanks also to the casts of the victims' bodies that make these places even more suggestive.
