In addition, visitors have access to a privileged view over the Atlantic Ocean. The Cristo Rei Viewpoint owes its name to the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus built on this spot. It is an imposing sculpture of Jesus Christ, with open arms, facing the ocean. It was financed and commissioned by counsellor Aires de Ornelas, son of the last majorat of Caniço. Inaugurated on 30 October 1927, this majestic statue, built at the top of a coastal ravine, is an indelible mark on the scenery that visitors find at the Cristo Rei Viewpoint. Because of its scenic and historical value, this is a must for those who visit Madeira's east coast.
