Marathon The story that everyone is familiar with is that of Pheidippides running from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce Greek victory, a distance of about 25 miles or 42 kilometers. Starting from the Kallimarmaro Stadium we follow this path the one of the most remarkable cities of the Global History  The Marathon Tomb located close to the road, 4 km from the town of Marathon, it is also known as the Tomb of the Athenians.  It is the final resting place of the 192 Athenian soldiers who died in the Battle of Marathon. The battle took place in this fertile plain and resulted in the defeat of the Persian army by the hands of the Athenians. It is considered to be one of the most significant moments in European history. Listen to your guide as he recounts the story of this bloody battle that took place here in 490 b.C, during the first Persian invasion of Greece. Learn how these fallen hoplites were cremated and buried in this tomb as a reminder of their sacrifice and bravery. Your tour will carry on to the site where the myth of the marathon race originates from. Your guide will tell you the fascinating legend of the soldier who ran 26 miles, from Marathon to the city of Athens. As the legend has it, he ran to inform his fellow citizens about their victory over the Persians and collapsed to death upon completing his duty. You will board your private car and enjoy a short drive through the verdant nature, on the provincial road the to Lake Marathon. At the lake's cafe, you might want to enjoy a drink or a snack (anything you may consume will be at your own expenses). You will now go for a soothing walk to the Marathon Dam. This is Athens' water reservoir Apart from the peaceful and romantic view, there is something that makes this structure unique and interesting. This is the only Dam in the world, entirely panelled with pristine white marble. You will be free to walk and explore the area and enjoy its majestic view.
