The Baptism Site Of Jesus Christ The Baptism Site of Jesus Christ, also known as Bethany Beyond the Jordan or Al-Maghtas, is an archaeological World Heritage Site in Jordan. It is located on the east bank of the Jordan River, north of the Dead Sea, and is believed to be the place where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. The site has been venerated as a pilgrimage destination since at least the Byzantine period, and there are many ruins of churches and monasteries from that time. In recent years, archaeological excavations have uncovered even more evidence of early Christian activity at the site, including caves used by hermits and a baptismal pool. The Baptism Site is open to the public and is a popular destination for both Christian pilgrims and tourists. There is a museum on site that tells the story of the baptism of Jesus, and there are also guided tours available.
