Windsor Castle Royal Windsor Castle. Home to royalty and 1,000 years of royal history. Windsor Castle was founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. Over the centuries this 900-year-old site has been extensively rebuilt and remodeled thanks to the 39 monarchs who have lived there. *St George's Chapel (Queen Elizabeth II resting place) within the grounds of Windsor Castle is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in England. Construction of the present Chapel began in 1475 under the reign of Edward IV. When visiting make sure you look up and admire the stone ceiling, which was added by Henry VII.
