Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari The grand Temple of Hatshepsut, located at Deir el-Bahari, rivals the Pyramids as one of the ancient world's remarkable funerary monuments. Built into the towering cliffs that border the Valley of the Kings, the temple rises in three impressive terraces linked by ramps, each level highlighted by a colonnade of stark, largely unadorned square pillars. This monumental site honors one of ancient Egypt’s few female pharaohs, who aptly called it the 'Splendor of Splendors.' However, much of the construction predates her reign, beginning with Mentuhotep II around 2050 BC. Many sphinxes and other statues have since disappeared, enhancing the temple's monolithic presence. Inside, the cool stone provides respite from the harsh heat, revealing well-preserved wall reliefs and hieroglyphics, some in brilliant hues.
