The caves of the monastery are unique underground man-made systems. The Near and the Far Caves of the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve are underground monuments of architecture, archaeology, history, and culture. They were dug in the high Dnipro hills between 5 and 15 meters deep.

In the caves are buried relics of the Lavra monks-ascetics who lived there in the period from the 11 till 15 century. It is in the Far Caves, where the relics of 49 saints are kept, began the history of the monastery...
