Very early departure by car with driver to Abu Simbel (3h30 drive)

1
Abu Simbel Temple Complex 290 kilometers south of Aswan, Abu Simbel is the largest sacred site in Nubia, both in size and the quality of its architecture, sculptures and bas-reliefs. The construction of the dam required the dismantling stone by stone of the two temples at the very top of the cliff in which they had been dug. The temple was therefore raised by about 60 meters. The task was complex, since it was necessary to reconstruct the mountain as it was. The two temples were first cut into blocks of 15 tons, which corresponds to the clearing of 31,0000 tons of rock, without using explosives. Each of the stones has been numbered and then reassembled. A support vault was built and the whole backfilled in the form of an artificial mountain. Other solutions to save the temple were at one time considered. One of them was to put the temple under a kind of glass bell under water.
